The big question that most people ask when they try to plan a fishing vacation is “Where do I start?” There are many things to take into consideration when planning any trip, but with fishing trips there are some pretty important basics to keep in mind.

No matter your destination of choice, a fishing license is key. Without it you will be fishing illegally and take a chance on having a nasty ticket and or impounds ruin your fishing adventure. Fishing license information is as close as your computer, as all Department of Fish and Games have a website with loads of information including fishing license age limits and costs.

While on their website, take a moment or two to see what other information may be of assistance. Maps, tips, and fishing regulations are just some of the things you will find useful when planning your fishing vacation.

Picking your dates to go angling will often be determined by fishing seasons. Some areas are only open for small amounts of time in order to give the fish an opportunity to spawn or may be limited by weather conditions. So research the seasons at the Department of Fish and Game sites or even by checking with a few of the area fishing charters.

Also make an attempt to find out fishing reports via news, fishing sites from the area, and again by checking with the fishing charters. Fishing websites and charters that focus on particular areas will have more first hand information and give you insight to key areas to fish.

Always keep an eye on the weather conditions as your fishing trip approaches. This will help you determine the proper fishing attire to pack for your fishing vacation. Remember the golden rule of clothing is that you can always peel in layers, but you cannot put on what you do not have.

Fluids such as water are important and plan on how you will be taking care of meals and snacks. Keeping hydrated while fishing is one of the most neglected things fisherman do. Water is paramount to your health. Besides, how much fun is a trip when you are hungry and thirsty? Not fun at all.

Another overlooked area is first aid. Bring a small first aid kit along. If you can remember to bring your bait and tackle, you can remember to bring a first aid kit and even a snakebite kit if you are planning on fishing in that type of terrain. Insect repellent should also be a must in your kit of essentials. Don’t forget the sun block and hats. They will keep the heat off and the sun burns away

Regardless of where you plan to fish or the type of fishing you wish to do, these basics of planning a fishing vacation will give you a better chance of enjoying your time and focusing on the big catch.
